Hotel staff told us this is a personal hotel shrine to the Inari god (represented as fox).

A tree in front of the hotel was still in full autumn glory, even though most of the other trees leaves have fallen already.

Nihon Romantic Highway at Chuzenji lake
For a change we decided to use some local buses to check out nearby attractions and sightseeing spots. We went down to the nearby road that turned out to be Japanese Romantic Highway at lake Chuzenji.

The lake itself.

The other direction view, road to the hotel (and their sign) is visible.

Ryuzu falls
First stop: Ryuzu falls. Meaning dragon head falls due to it's dual falls at the bottom. The length of the waterfall is about 230 meters on the Yugawa river, height is 60 meters.

Caution, Bears!
As we cross the bridge and step on the unpaved trail, we are greeted with a warning about bears ;)

This is probably the beginning spot.

Entrance to bear wildlief territory
Walking further on the trail we eventually get to a gate with more wildlife and bear warnings.

Forest

Forest
Behind the gate everything looks like a forest and the trail went away from the river so we decided to turn back.

Ryuzu falls
The very bottom of the waterfall - the double streams.

Chuzenji lake
From the Ryuzu falls we decided to cross the lake and headed to the nearby ship station.

Isle at Chuzenji lake
Kozukeshima isle located just about 100 meters from the nearest land, but not connected to it in any way. When the water in the lake is low you can ford the water to the isle.

Some graves are located there.

Mt. Nantai and Chuzenji lake
Mt. Nantai with some lava trails visible. Our hotel is also located there.

Inside the ship.

Chuzenji lake
Itallian villa shore. Somehow this is an area with a lot of embassies and their properties at the lake shore.

Tachiki-Kannon temple tickets
We got off the ship at Tashiki-kannon temple and decided to see what is it all about.

Tachiki-Kannon temple

Inside the temple there is a large statue of Kannon made of wood, but photography is prohibited. You also get to hear a long sales pitch about buying the temple amulets.

From there we walked towards Kegon falls.

Old wooden house
Some old wooden building we saw on the way.

Bentley in front of a restaurant
Also on the way there is a classic Bentley car.

Pretty luxurious inside.

Monkey at Kegon Falls
At the falls first thing we see are monkeys.

And bigger one that seems to be attacking all nearby women trying to get them away from the viewpoint.

Waterfalls from the top viewpoint.

There's also an elevator that transports you ~ 100m down the wall so you can see the falls from below, it costs 530 yen per person.

Kegon Falls

The Kegon falls formed when rived Daiya was rerouted by lava flows. The water falls from the height of 97 meters.

Gon and monkeys

In the nearby souvenir shop we have found a bunch of Hunter x Hunter merchandise which was pretty surprising as it was rare to come by elsewhere, even though the manga is actually very popular.

Monkey snot
At another shop we came by sme strange sweets advertised as "monkey snot". Ewww...

Crepe at Chuzenji crepe shop
Crepes that we had high hopes for, but unfortunately was not too good, and the strawberries were frozen unlike what was shown on the picture at the entrance.

Chuzenji lake
As we started to think how to get back to the hotel, a bus with our hotel signs stopped across the road, so we hopped on it. It turned out this was a special bus to pick a large group of people from the station and they also made a small detour to stop near the Tachika-Kannon place too.

Ryokan room
Back to hotel, this is how our room looked like with the beds hidden.

Ryokan bath
And this is our private bath with the "view".
