Anime Expo 2012

With a huge delay, here's our report from Anime Expo 2012 that happened at the July 4th weekend in 2012.

AX'12 badges and poster
This year we came to AX as premier members again hoping for as great experience as in 2011, but reality made it's own corrections.

First of all when booking hotel I made a mistake not realizing there are multiple Marriotts around and booked the one recommended that happened to be one much further away from the convention center and much more run down at that too.

The reason the one Marriott I wanted was not available is because AnimeExpo coincided with The X Games weekend so lots of streets were closed and lots of hotels booked solid, also huge unrelated crowds on the streets and terrible traffic jams.

Entrance Hall

Entrance Hall
Lots of people in the registration lines.

Then we went to find out where is the Exhibitor Hall line is for Premier members (they get to access it 1 hour before) and found a huge line there:

It seems AX became greedy and sold a lot of those tickets while still claiming their limited availability. The result: huge premier lines everywhere that really made the status pointless, I think.

Returning to the early Exhibit Hall access, it was delayed by 20 minutes and the promised general public availability delay of the same magnitude did not really happen which added to the insult.

Planet Cray, Vanguard
But finally, we are in. Planet Cray, heh? ;)

Of course freebies are always important.

Shiny phone cases that rival those we saw in Japan.

There was some sort of pole dancing event at one of the big animation licensors booth too:

Since our hotel not very close to the convention center, we relied on AX-provided buses to get there. And not just us, there were big lines waiting for these buses.

Santa Cosplay
It was a little bit too early for the Christmas-man, though ;)

And then we went to AniMetal USA autograph signing session. Those guys below are not cosplayers, they are the real thing ;) We also attended their concert, but the sound engineer there was not the greatest (no pictures from the concert).

This time we took Suigintou and Shiro with us and met many other people who came to AnimeExpo with their dolls. This is one of such spontaneous gatherings.

And here we can see them in Tenshi no Sumika in LA that we paid a brief visit to.

A LISA concert in the evening was kind of cool because they allowed video and photo, but uncool because they said they would not so we did not bring any of our better equipment. Also this is not exactly the knd of music we greatly enjoyed. (Next day there was a concert of Yuki Kajiura that was much better amd with great sound too, but they had a very strict no photo/video policy unfortunately).

Ah, the Card Captor Sakura cosplay.

And this concludes the report, I guess.

We were so disappointed with the general level of the event this time that we decided not to get any tickets to AX'13 before full details are known and perhaps skip it altogether.
